Hyderabad: A three-foot-long black cobra was rescued by wildlife activists on Saturday evening from the Kowkoor village in Malkajgiri Mandal Telangana besides the Secunderabad Cantonment area in the city.

The cobra was rescued from a truck carrying raw materials from Uttar Pradesh, the moment people saw the snake they ring up to Friends of Snakes Society.

Speaking to siasat.com Avinash Visvanathan, General Secretary of Friends of Snakes Society said, “It was a morphed (colouration) Spectacled Cobra which was rescued during evening hours of Saturday by M. Sai Kiran, a member of Friends of Snakes Society.”

Further, Avinash said that these snakes are usually found in southern India, Spectacled Cobras are usually light brown in colour whereas, in North India, they are dark brown or black. The cobra was three-foot-long. After the initial examination, the cobra was found to be healthy. It was rehabilitated in its habitat in Nehru Zoological Park.

The snake has been handed over to Nehru Zoological Park for care in captivity.  “This specimen may not survive the harsh summer temperatures of Telangana.

An Ornate Flying Snake, which is not found in Telangana, was accidentally transported along with timber in 2017, Avinash revealed.
