Hyderabad: Andhra Pradesh journalist Komineni Srinivas Rao was arrested in Hyderabad by the AP police on Monday, June 9, over an alleged remark on women.
The incident occurred while Rao, a journalist at Sakshi Telugu Television, was moderating a session with VVR Krishnam Raju, a journalist and political analyst, during a show. Following the incident, people in Andhra Pradesh filed police complaints against the journalist, stating that derogatory remarks were made against women from Amravathi during the programme.
A team of officials led by Thullur DSP Murali Krishna arrested Kommineni Srinivasa Rao in Hyderabad, and the Guntur district police confirmed the same.
The police also informed that the hunt is on for the arrest of Krishnam Raju, who is absconding from his residence in Vijayawada.
According to reports, the Andhra Pradesh Women’s Commission chairperson, Rayapati Sailaja, condemned the remarks and demanded an unconditional apology to the entire state by the Sakshi TV management.
Sailaja further maintained that the commission has taken the issue very seriously, as Sakshi TV and their management “targeted women and insulted them”.
She questioned how they could broadcast a debate, which was unacceptable in any society. Sailaja further added that the women’s commission will write letters to the Press Council of India, the Union ministry of information and broadcasting, urging stringent action against the Sakshi TV.
She called for the license of Sakshi TV to be revoked. The Commission will also pursue legal and police action against Sakshi TV management.
The action on Sakshi TV should send a strong signal to all that no such news should be repeated in the future by any news channel.
Enraged over the remark, farmers, women and all Joint Action Committees have called a protest in front of Sakshi offices in Guntur, Vijayawada and other locations in the capital region.
