Hyderabad Desk

Hyderabad: The foundation stone for the much-anticipated new Osmania General Hospital (OGH) will be laid on Friday, with Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy leading the ceremony at Goshamahal. This marks a major step towards strengthening public healthcare in Hyderabad and across the state.

The new hospital, which will span 32 lakh square feet, is designed to be a world-class medical facility with 2,000 beds. It will include 29 major and 12 minor operation theatres, state-of-the-art robotic surgery, and a dedicated transplant theatre. With advanced biomedical waste management systems, along with sewage (STP) and effluent treatment plants (ETP), the hospital is being built to meet the highest standards of medical care.

Beyond patient care, the new medical education and training wing will host 30 departments, including eight emerging super-specialty disciplines. It will also feature a new academic block with nursing, dental, and physiotherapy colleges, creating a strong foundation for medical professionals of the future.

To ensure seamless access, the hospital will have a ground-plus-two parking facility. The surrounding roads, including those near the police stadium, are being redesigned to eliminate traffic signals, using tactical underpasses for smoother movement. Additionally, a government school on the site is being relocated and rebuilt, ensuring that local students continue their education without disruption.

One of the biggest advancements will be the inclusion of helipads to enable helicopter-based emergency evacuations. A crucial addition for super-critical patients and organ transplant cases where every second counts.

The hospital campus will cover 26 acres and 30 guntas, while the adjoining 11 acres and 14 guntas will be redeveloped by the police department to support their operational needs. This will not only improve coordination between law enforcement and medical services but also enhance the overall infrastructure in the area.

Hospital with a rich legacy

The Osmania General Hospital is not just another medical facility; it is a part of Hyderabad’s history. Established in 1919 by Mir Osman Ali Khan, the last Nizam of Hyderabad, it has been a lifeline for generations. But its roots go back even further. Originally founded as Afzalgunj Hospital in 1866 by Salar Jung I.

For decades, this hospital has been the first stop for thousands in need, treating over 3,000 outpatients and 1,200 inpatients every day. Its dedicated medical staff have historically performed 100 to 150 major surgeries daily, along with countless smaller procedures.

As Hyderabad continues to grow, the city is reinvesting in its medical heritage, ensuring that OGH remains a pillar of healthcare. This new hospital is more than just a building. it’s a commitment to better medical facilities, enhanced education, and a healthier future for everyone.
