Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has taken up a massive sanitation drive at Gandhi Hospital, aimed at providing cleaner environment to the public, said officials of the civic body.
Gandhi Hospital is the designated Covid hospital in Hyderabad and several areas within the hospital were reportedly neglected for several years making it a dumping yard. Now with the clearing of the dumping yards, the officials have made it into a waiting area for attendants who are not allowed inside Covid wards.
According to a GHMC official, the sanitation drive has been taken up in order to provide a clean environment and premises to the public.
The officials informed that besides large number of sanitary workers deployed to collect and lift the garbage, at least ten vehicles of six ton and 25 ton capacities were pressed into service.
According to Srinivas Reddy, GHMC Zonal Commissioner, Secunderabad, nearly 500 metric tons of waste was lifted and transferred to Jawaharnagar MSW plant and Jeedimetla and Fathullaguda C&D plants during the sanitation drive. The waste consisted mostly of garbage, green waste and old hospital beds. At least a hundred trips were made to clear the garbage and waste, he informed.
In addition, illumination works were also taken up at the hospital and saplings were also planted to make it more clean and green.
Arvind Kumar, Principal Secretary, Municipal Administration and Urban Development monitored the sanitation drive and instructed officials to make additional arrangements like shelter for patient attendants.
