Gulf worker dies after return to Telangana, family seeks Rs 5L ex gratia

Hyderabad Desk

Hyderabad: A 61-year-old migrant worker from Telangana died days after being brought back from Dubai in a critical condition, with his family now seeking Rs 5 lakh ex gratia from the state government.

Arelli Gangarajam, from Polasa village in Jagtial district, had been working in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) as a concrete mason assistant. He was hospitalised in Dubai, after being diagnosed with acute kidney failure.

He was later shifted to and admitted to the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) on December 14. Despite treatment, he died on December 24 at a government hospital in Jagtial.

Clause limits eligibility

The Telangana government provides Rs 5 lakh assistance to families of migrant workers who die while employed in Gulf countries under G O Ms No 216. However, the provision applies only when the death occurs abroad, placing this case outside its scope.

Representation submitted

The worker’s wife, Rajavva, and son, Jalandhar, approached authorities during the CM Pravasi Prajavani programme at Praja Bhavan in Begumpet on March 31, requesting consideration on humanitarian grounds.

The representation was backed by Jagtial MLA Dr Makunuri Sanjay Kumar.

Matter under review

Officials have initiated a review following directions from Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister Seshadri. IAS officer Divya Devarajan said alternative support, including assistance through the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund, would be examined.

The issue was also raised by State Planning Board Vice Chairman Dr G. Chinna Reddy and NRI Advisory Committee Vice Chairman Manda Bheem Reddy.

Policy concern emerges

The case points to a gap affecting workers who fall critically ill overseas but die after returning to India.

State Minister Ponnam Prabhakar said the government remains supportive of migrant workers and their families.
