HC stays cutting of trees in Gandipet area

Hyderabad: While ruling a stay on felling of 244 trees in Gandipet area for road expansion, the Telangana High Court instructed the government departments to consider NGO’s representation for re-location of the trees.

A HC bench of Chief Justice Hima Kohli and Justice Abhishek Reddy, while delivering an interim order, directed the R&B and the Forest Departments to review the representation made by the NGO.

The state government entrusted the task of road expansion to R&B and the Forest Departments under whose supervision a plan to fell 244 trees has been prepared. These trees are found at the stretch of a kilometer which are needed to be felled for the road expansion.

A total of 286 trees are found on both sides of the road of which 244 trees are required to be cut to construct the road.

An NGO has informed the government that it is ready to re-locate these trees to another location on its expense.

The HC instructed the state government to take a decision on the NGO’s request within a week. Till then the HC imposed a stay on felling the trees.

The next hearing of the Court shall be held on June 14, 2021.
