Hyderabad: Unani doctors request govt. to permit them perform surgeries

Hyderabad: The Unani doctors belonging to the city’s most prestigious Nizamia Tibbi College, popularly called Charminar Unani Dawakhana, on Monday urged the government to grant them permission to perform surgeries.

A member of Unani Doctors association said, “We are also taught the same syllabus as that in MBBS and are well trained to perform surgeries, in fact, we also have a year’s internship in our Bachelor’s course. “

“We are soon going to send a representation to the Union government” said the association member.

According to practitioners, Unani medicine is about achieving a balance of the bodily fluids that are known as “the four humors” (blood, phlegm, yellow bile, and black bile) which are essential to health.

Telangana has almost 8,000 Unani practitioners who urge the government to allow them to perform surgeries. They asked, “When the government can permit Ayurveda doctors then why not us?”

Last month, on January 15 the Central Council of Indian Medicine (CCIM), India’s principal regulatory body for Ayurveda education recently released a notification allowing postgraduate Ayurveda practitioners to perform 58 types of surgeries.
