Hyderabad: To prevent accidents caused by low visibility, the Telangana transport department on Friday, September 12, issued guidelines making it mandatory for all categories of transport and private vehicles to be fitted with reflective tapes and rear marking plates, as per the Motor Vehicles Act.
Officials observed that several motorists either park their vehicles on roads or move slowly during nighttime, often causing accidents as approaching drivers fail to notice them clearly.
AIS quality tapes mandatory: Transport dept
To address this, the department has directed that only high-quality reflective tapes with international standards such as AIS 057, AIS 090, and AIS 089 should be affixed to vehicles.
The transport department also warned that fitness certificates will not be issued and registration renewals will be suspended for vehicles using low-quality or counterfeit reflective materials.
Further, strict action, including criminal cases, will be taken against those manufacturing, selling, or distributing fake reflective tapes.
Manufacturers responsible for new vehicles: Dept
For new vehicles, the responsibility will lie with automobile manufacturers, who must ensure that reflective tapes are affixed at the production stage itself before sale.
According to the transport department, the decision was taken after reviewing reports from the Commissioner of Transport and considering Supreme Court directions on road safety compliance.
