Water tanker bookings increase by 36 pc in Hyderabad

Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) on Tuesday, July 15, informed that water tanker bookings under the six zones have increased by 36 percent since last year due to low rainfall.

This is likely to increase further.

According to the water board, from last year’s July 1 to July 14, there was a demand of 63,724 tankers. This number has increased to 86,520 this year.

HMWSSB revealed a highly disproportionate pattern of water tanker usage, where out of the 14 lakh connections, only 42,000 households are booking tankers. And among them, just 500 residents are shown to have booked 31,000 tankers in a span of 75 days during summer.

The data also reveals that 22,000 people booked 90 percent of the water tankers which amounts to 2.84 lakh tankers across the city.

During a survey, the water board found that no infiltration wells were present in houses. Accordingly, notices were issued to 16,000 people to construct infiltration wells along with a 90-day awareness program.

The Telangana government have repeatedly appealed to residents to construct infiltration wells on every residential premises above 300 yards within the ORR limits. Residents would have to shell out extra money on water tankers if these wells are not constructed.

Officials have been instructed to make a list of the households without infiltration wells by next month.
