Ranbir Kapoor’s Ramayana has a link to 1934 film, Know more

Hyderabad Desk

Hyderabad: The teaser of Ramayana is finally out today, and fans are excited to see Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Ram for the first time. The glimpse has already created strong buzz online.

But what is making this moment even more special is a surprising connection from the past. Almost 92 years ago, Ranbir’s great-grandfather Prithviraj Kapoor had played the same role on screen.

Bollywood’s First Ramayana Film

In 1934, filmmaker Debaki Bose made Seeta, one of the earliest talkie films based on the Ramayana. The film was based on the Uttar Kand and was first made in Bengali before releasing in Hindi.

It also made history by premiering at the Venice Film Festival. It became the first Indian talkie to be shown there and even won a diploma award.

In Seeta, a 28-year-old Prithviraj Kapoor played Lord Ram. His performance was widely appreciated and helped him become one of the top stars of that time.

The film also starred Durga Khote as Sita. She later became a well-known face in Hindi cinema.

History Repeats After 92 Years

Now, in 2026, Ranbir Kapoor is stepping into the same role in Ramayana. This makes it a rare moment where two actors from the same family play Lord Ram across generations.

Ranbir, the grandson of Raj Kapoor, is continuing a legacy that started nearly a century ago.

The film is being made on a massive budget of around Rs. 4000 crore for both parts combined, making it one of the most expensive films ever made in India.

Ramayana: Part 1 is set to release during Diwali 2026, while Ramayana: Part 2 will hit theatres in Diwali 2027.

With a grand scale, powerful cast including Sai Pallavi, Yash, and Sunny Deol, and a strong legacy behind it, the film is already one of the most awaited projects in Indian cinema.
