Tabla maestro and global musician Zakir Hussain passed away at the age of 73 in the United States on Sunday, December 15. He was admitted to the ICU of a San Francisco hospital after experiencing heart-related problems, his friend and flautist Rakesh Chaurasia said.
The musician had been having blood pressure issues.

Son of the legendary tabla virtuoso Ustad Alla Rakha Khan, Zakir Hussain was a popular figure in Indian classical and world music.
He began his musical journey at the tender age of seven. By 12 years of age, little Zakir was performing across India.
With his exceptional tabla skills, Zakir Hussain showcased a distinguished career with several national and international performances. He also contributed to Indian and world films.
He was awarded the prestigious Padma Shri in 1988, Padma Bhushan in 2002, and Padma Vibhushan in 2023 by the Indian government. He was also honoured with India’s highest recognition in music, the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1990.
About 40 years ago, he relocated to San Francisco with his family and continued to play a pivotal role in the world of music.
